Manufacturing Widgets

In the manufacturing of widgets the average length of its connector piece is 100 cm.  Now a widget is usable as long as the length of the connector is within 5 cm of the average, otherwise it needs to be replaced. 

• Using the absolute value symbol, express the fact that an individual measurement, x, of a connector should not differ from the average by more than 5 cm.

• Represent your solution in more than one way.

• Which solution format do you think would be most useful for this situation and why?
